Page 4 March 2019 The Oklahoma Squeezins OAC Meeting Minutes February 10, 2019 aggie Abel opened the meeting at 3:35 pm with 19 members and 4 guests in attendance. Questions about the upcoming National Accordion Association convention were directed to the website (http://www.accordions.com/naa) to obtain the best hotel rates, which include a great breakfast. Members who are going to attend were advised that music in three parts could be downloaded from the site for the various convention bands. Carpools and roommates were suggested. Members were asked to contact Barbara Pedersen, pedersen.barbara@yahoo.com, as she would like to catch a ride and/or roommate to the convention. The excitement is mounting for those who will attend! Jean Hill, a guest who teaches Irish step dancing, demonstrated an Irish jig. She brought her accordion and played a merry Irish jig. She also played: • “March of St. Timothy,” a contra dance, and • “The Irish Washerwoman” Come again soon, Jean! Larry Gering suggested we create a monthly "gig" calendar, so Club members can attend the events of fellow members. Dick Albreski puts many such events in his newsletter calendar. An Italian bandoneon will be playing at the Civic Center, Saturday, February 16, at 8:00 pm. The bandoneon is a type of button box. Bob Mansfield brought up a great tip. Pender's Music Store sells music stand extensions. Sounds like a great idea. Who hasn't struggled with that third or fourth page of music? Bob also explained that his Weltmeister accordion has a French sound on his reeds. He played the beautiful "Where is Your Heart.” He is also working with a Tejano musician to write a Tejano polka. He played his own composition: • “Hill Country Polka” Dick Albreski serenaded us with his Valentine party songs: • “I'm in the Mood for Love” • “Lover” Maggie reminded us that Club members help to set up the meeting room at 2:00 pm. The officers meet at 2:30 pm, and jamming officially starts at 3:00 pm. However, some early birds begin jamming a bit sooner, while the officers are still meeting. Official Club meeting starts at 3:30 pm. Ron Shearon drives 85 miles to attend, all the way from Bison, Oklahoma. Last month he showed us his Giulietti accordion. This time he brought his "aluminum" Hohner accordion to demonstrate the musette reed sound when he played: • “This Song Is for You” Wayne Turgeon brought three guests with him. Thanks, Wayne! He played: • “Over the Waves” • “Emperor Waltz” Anne Lopez and Lois Roth romanced us with: • “Harbor Lights” • “You Can't Be True Dear” • “Only You” The Fun Band (Lois Roth, Karen West, Toni Paulding, and Barb Duer on her banjo), led by Dick, entertained us with many songs: • “Melodie D'Amour” • “That's Amore” • “Liechtensteiner Polka” • “Are You Lonesome Tonight” waltz medley • “Salute to George M. Cohan” The Band will be rehearsing to play at the Convention. Karen ended our meeting with a golden oldie: • “Breaking Up Is Hard to Do” REMINDERS: Members were reminded that the usual second Sunday Club meeting in March will be moved to the THIRD SUNDAY, March 17, due to the May 6-10 accordion convention. If you plan to play in our annual August concert, you should already be preparing. Members are requested to perform their numbers for the Club beginning in May, in order to get used to playing before a group, and give Maggie the name of their pieces. If you haven't paid your dues, please send your renewal to Treasurer Tom Phillips, 3326 NS 367 Rd., Holdenville, OK 74844, or in person at the meeting. Thanks! • Anne Lopez, Secretary February Meeting Anne Lopez
